Martin's Christmas Carol

A 20 minute Christmas musical

Book by Gary Sironen; lyrics & music adapted by Gary Sironen

An imaginary tale about German religious reformer Martin Luther and his effort to direct his first children's Christmas musical, with a little help from his wife, Kate. In Scene 1, Martin shares his frustrations about agreeing to prepare a children's Christmas musical while Kate is trying to tailor Martin's costume. Scene 2 is a hectic rehearsal during which kids ask Martin questions about the meaning of the Christmas story. During Scene 3, the kids present the musical, inviting the audience to sing along.

This musical is written for a small cast of 3-6 children and two adults (or older kids playing adult roles), but it can easily be adapted for a larger cast and amended with the addition of audience sing-along Christmas Carols between scenes 2 & 3.

Martin's responses are based on Luther's Christmas sermons. The music is adapted from Luther's Christmas hymn, "From Heaven Above to Earth I Come", which Luther actually wrote for use as a Christmas Pageant.
